Abstract

Popular summary Sports should be fun and safe for everyone, but this is not always the case. Sometimes due to aggressive-play, an opponent can get hurt. This is just one example of how the integrity of an athlete can be violated. And to make sure these things do not happen too often rules are made to regulate sports. But sometimes the rules on the field are not enough to keep sports safe and fun. It can happen that someone in the team is bullied, or even worse, touched in private places by other team player or by the coach. This can be challenging for people without a disability, but for people with a disability this might be even a bigger challenge. Therefore we looked at how sport federations prevent the athletes with a physical disability from getting hurt. This study made a map of all the rules and agreements that have been made to protect the athletes with a physical disability, coaches and other people from getting hurt. The following sports organizations have been investigated for this study: Parantee-Psylos (Flanders, Belgium), the International Paralympic Committee, the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation, and the Boccia International Sport federation. The researchers have looked into the agreements and rules of the federation to understand how they try to protect their athletes, coaches and all actors involved. Interviews were done with the athletes with a physical disability, coaches and other people to see how they experience the rules and agreements of their federation, and what the future needs are with regard to what is called integrity management. The research showed that the federations should improve their rules and agreements to prevent their athletes, coaches, and other people from getting hurt. But the people from the different teams also said that they are in need of more basic support such as help from a physical therapist, psychologist, or doctor when they go to a tournament.
